Step #1. Adjust your seat.
Please bear in mind that you are not allowed to drive yourself to the road test site. A licensed driver in a properly insured, registered and inspected vehicles has to take you.
If that person is taller or shorter that you, you will have to adjust your seat or else; you will be very uncomfortable.
Step #2. Adjust your mirrors.
You being able to adequately observe is very important to you driving your car safely. If you are not driving safely, you will be denied a NYS driver's license.
Step #3. Put on your seat belt.
Driving without a seat belt is unsafe and may result in you getting a ticket.
Step #4. Start your car.
This is a very important step. Many student drivers have failed as a result of forgetting to start the vehicle.
Step #5. Put your car in gear.
Yet another troubling area where student drivers mess up. One young man was so nervous, he forgot the car in drive and applied gas 3 times.
When he was about to apply gas a fourth time, the inspector stopped him and ended the road test.
Step #6. Signal.
After gear comes signal. Since you will be pulling out from the right side of the road, you should signal left.
Step #7. Wheel.
After signaling left, please turn the steering wheel to the left. The amount you turn the wheel to the left is determined by how close you are to the vehicle in front of you.
Step #8. Mirror.
Look in the side view mirror on your left side.
Yet another very critical area. Failure to adequately observe could result in you failing your road test.
If you pull out when another car is coming, the DMV inspector will apply brakes and fail you.
Step #9. Blind Spot.
Look in blind spot.
This is an area where you can't see from your mirrors and can only be seen by turning your head to physically look there.
Get this wrong and you could potentially fail.
Step #10. Take our 5 hour class.
